I apologize once again for my lack of diligence when it comes to my blog. I actually wrote this post the day after it happened which was December 22, 2014. So if you will, take yourself back to that day and read along.
This past weekend I had the chance to be apart of something that I someday wish to have for myself. An engagement! I am so thrilled because two very close friends of mine got engaged. This however, was not the easiest task. I am making it sound like we had to avoid hurricanes to pull it off, but you know that episode of Modern Family when Mitchell and Cam decide to both propose to one another? It was more like that.
My best friend Matthew calls me probably 3-4 weeks ago with his plan to propose to his boyfriend during his trip to KC. I am so excited that I get to be a part of this plan! But then I get a call probably a week ago from Phil, the other half, and he has a plan to propose to Matthew and fly into KC a day early. I am sure you can understand by now, that this created somewhat of a pickle for me. I don't know the protocol for this type of thing! I tried to play it off on the phone with Phil that his plan would be great and amazing. When in the back of my mind all I can think is, Matthew is planning to propose too!
To give you a clear timeline: Matthew plans to pick Phil up from the airport on Monday, hang around KC for a bit, all while I am setting things up at the "spot" for the proposal. And then Matthew all romantic would bring Phil to the "spot" and I would be hiding or creeping with a camera … depending on how you look at it. But then I receive this call from Phil telling me his idea to fly in a day early on Sunday and propose Sunday night.
The best part of the whole thing however, was that they both concocted the exact same arrangement: Same place, around the same time, and ended up having the same rings! Which made things easier for me in the scheme of things!
Matthew is currently living in Boston, so I picked him up from the airport Thursday night. We had a our week together of driving to and from the city. Talking about how surprised Phil would be and buying the champagne and chocolates to celebrate. But when Sunday arrived I had to be a bit sneaky in getting all of his stuff packed up and to KC without him knowing. Luckily me and my trusty sidekick Tanja, created a pretty organic situation. Saying we needed to go to KC anyways to do some shopping on the plaza. Matthew was already in the city visiting family so we met on the Plaza, grabbed dinner downtown, and then killed some more time by getting a drink and dessert at another place. Then we played it off like Matthew needed to show me where the "spot" was and where he wanted me to set up for his proposal. But when we would arrive at this spot Phil would already be there.
I would like to add that modern technology is a wonderful tool when trying to plan something like this, but can also cause some problems. With all the texts coming in from Phil with the possibility of Matthew just seeing a text notification on my phone and getting curious. I was so nervous! Matthew and I are close enough that I wouldn't even question him opening up the text anyways. But I held my phone close! Tanja used taking pictures as a distraction while we waited for Phil to arrive to the destination. He was running a bit behind or we were early. Tanja and I were asking Matthew random questions like would he like me behind this pillar hiding or down the stairs and would he want me taking pictures close up or from far away? It was getting ridiculous when Phil text me that he had arrived. Tanja took my phone and starting taking pics of Matthew and I when Matthew turns around and looks up to see Phil standing across the way. Sorry I am not a better writer... because I feel as if I can't give the moment the justice it deserves!
Tanja and I stood near by and giggled together with joy as we pretended to not be paying attention... oopsie. ;)
I am so thrilled. I sit here now already anticipating the arrival of my invite and the writing of my speech. Yes Matthew, that will be happening at some point. As you can see it went wonderfully! All parties were filled with joy and even though it was freezing outside, I was so warm on the inside. So here is to a San Fran Wedding in 2016! It can't come soon enough I tell ya!
Cheers to love, friendship, and putting it all out there.
